Out and About: Meet Me at The Derby! II

Well, you waited 5 months for the breathtaking conclusion to my first post about the Brown Derby (link). Thanks, and welcome back! Today's post focuses on another "hidden" aspect of the Derby which also has a connection to The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney World.

If you aren't familiar with the caricature above, then you clearly are like most Guests who visit the Brown Derby each year. While walking around the restaurant one day I noticed that two--the other one is another topic for another day-- caricatures were clearly a clash of style when compared to the reproduced original celebrity caricatures of the '30s-'80s that decorate the Derby. I took note of the name and set out to find who this person was.

Turns out, it's Jess Rubio. Who? Exactly. For those of you not familiar with Jess, I'll let the Orlando Sentinel do the explaining...

RUBIO, JESS, of Windermere, FL, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010, at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital in Orlando. He was 77 years old. Jess was born in Riverside, CA, to Mexican immigrants Manuel and Enriqueta Rubio. Jess served his country in the US Marine Corps and the United States Air Force before attending art school and becoming a professional artist. In 1962, he founded his own company of artists, Rubio Arts Corp., which still operates artist and balloon concessions at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, and at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL. He also received the prestigious Legend Award from the Disneyana Fan Club in the fall of 2008. (The full link can be seen here)

Outside of the Derby is an artist who can draw you your very own caricature.

If you'd like to find Jess' caricature at the Derby, all you have to do is walk into the dinning room and continue walking straight and up the other set of stairs directly across from you. His caricature will be on the wall in front of you and a bit to the right. While you are looking for him, see if you can spot the other caricature of someone who is not a celebrity from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

One of the most delicious and elegantly themed restaurants at Walt Disney World is the Hollywood Brown Derby at Hollywood Studios. While the original Brown Derby restaurants have a rich history of their own, the Florida counterpart also has some interesting tidbits scattered across the restaurant. In this post I wanted to focus on the autograph book which is proudly displayed to Guests as they enter the building.

The Florida Brown Derby opened on May 1, 1989 along with the rest of the Disney-MGM Studios. To make sure the restaurant lived up to its name, the opening and early years were filled with visits from celebrities and Disney legends. The latter is what I want to share with all of you.

This is your view when you first enter the restaurant. The book is displayed under Plexiglas and showcases a different page everyday. The one on display in this photo is the book from 1989-circa 2000. There are two version of the Brown Derby autograph book and the second starts circa 2000-present. The first version is supposedly on loan from the Walt Disney Archives for one year. An interesting tidbit about the second book (usually not on display) is that it contains autographs by Guests. One of the Magical Moments performed at the Derby is to have the family of the day sign an autograph book. Well, there was some confusion and the Guests were given the second version book to sign instead of the version intended for Magical Moments.

The following pages are from the original book and contain only the folks who played a part in Disney history.

Marc Davis, Imagineer (pg. 525). Marc is usually confused by Guests as having something to do with 'The Simpsons' since his caricature is similar to the shows style of animation.

Starting in the middle, Wayne Allwine, former voice of Mickey Mouse, and Russi Taylor,voice of Minnie Mouse. I've forgotten who signed the top of the page.

Dick Nunis, former executive vice president of Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Michael Eisner, former cheif executive officer of The Walt Disney Company.

Annette Funicello, former Mousketeer and Disney child star.

Many of the signatures in the original book have been identified and are labeled in a book that Guests of the Derby can view upon request. Unfortunately, not all of the signatures in the near 600 page book have been identified. Some were just too difficult to make out.

Next time we meet, I'll share a story about another Disney great found in the Florida Brown Derby, but this one has a spot all to themselves.

Electric and Mustard

The sweatshirt extravaganza continues! This mustard yellow sweatshirt is from the 1970s and features the brilliant original WDW logo in a simple and eye-catching fashion.

This is another design I'd like to see be brought back. With the success--in my opinion-- of the "new retro WDW" (link) shirt, Disney could have another great seller on its hands. I really like the contrast between the two colors and the way the logo jumps out at you.

The tag reads small and I believe it's a children's small. Two reasons why: there is no way I can fit into it and I've only seen pictures of kids wearing this sweater. I know there is a photo somewhere in my collection of a girl at Fort Wilderness wearing one.

WDW shirts from the 1970s are definitely hard to find and this particular one is the most common one I see on eBay. However, if you own a different shirt from that time period, please e-mail me with pictures and I will gladly post them.

Gonna Make You Sweatshirt

If it's vintage clothes and EPCOT Center, it must be another one of my posts. This fabulous sweatshirt is another testament to great design and the brilliant person(s) who were in charge parks merchandise in the 1980s. It uses the main entrance illustration that was prevalent during the opening and early years of EPCOT Center and serves as a reminder of how aesthetically beautiful the main entrance used to be.

I miss the raglan style and wish it would make a huge comeback. In case you are not familiar with raglan, it's a baseball style shirt with 3/4 length sleeves. Although this sweater has full sleeves, I still classify it as such.

The tag reads large and I hope it means a child's large because I definitely can't fit into it.

IT'S MY FRIDAY!

"It's my Friday!" is a common phrase amongst Cast Members which represents the day before their day(s) off. Having said it myself many times, I couldn't help but buy this pin. Not only do I think it's great that Disney has acknowledged this "every man" cry in pin form, but they've included a spinner feature which lets you change the day of the week featured in the calendar.

It's the little things like these that make Disney such a unique company to be part of.

WEDWAY PINMOVER

It has been an interesting year for Walt Disney World. What, with Captain EO returning, the Fantasyland expansion changing plans, and now this; the Peoplemover is back...kinda. While the name still contains a reference to the TTA, you best believe it's comforting to have 1/2 of the original title back.

Released on July 1, 2010 and one month shy of the new name, this pin celebrates 35 years of the ingenious transportation system and is limited to a production run of 1000. The car Mickey is riding in can slide up and down--you could also say back and forth-- and the 35th anniversary bit has a slight sparkle. There was another Peoplemover pin released in 2005 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the attraction and your pals Mickey and Minnie were riding it back then too. This Looks Familiar, Too!

Continuing with the tradition of my last post, here is another new shirt currently being sold at Walt Disney World. It looks very similar to the design of shirt I have from the 1980s. However, claiming that this shirt is trying to replicate the overall look and feel of an older product is a bit of a stretch considering it uses such an iconic image. Still, it looks too much like something I own to go unnoticed by yours truly.

This is the shirt I own. It is from the 1980s and is as brilliant and appealing as it was back then. A few noticeable differences is the newer shirt is already designed to look old, the material is see through, and the colors are faded. Also, the newer shirt is made for girls, while mine--though probably made for men at the time-- could pass as a unisex.

Like the "new vintage" WDW t-shirt from last post, these Mickey Mouse shirts are sold in different colors. While they may not have the zest of my yellow shirt, I do think it's a good idea to appeal to more people and their taste in fashion.

I'd like to see this color paired with a Minnie Mouse design. I think that'd look great.

This shirt is one of many examples of the return to truly great Disney Parks merchandise. While I do have reservations about how thin the material is, I can't help being won over by its simplicity and use of a great design. Expect a couple more posts about new Disney t-shirts as there are quite a few winners currently on the market at WDW.

This Looks Familiar

Today's post features an item that I am very pleased to see being sold at Walt Disney World. I've always been a fan of the vintage Mickey Mouse WDW t-shirt (pictured below) and have told my friends ad nauseum that if Disney were to re-release that design, it would sell like hot cakes. Well, that very event has occurred and it looks like I was right.

As you can see, the new design (left) is very similar to the vintage one. Disney World has had an influx of retro merch over the past couple years and it has proved to be very popular amongst fanatics. However, this "new retro" shirt has broke the mold. At the very affordable price of $14.95, Disney has mixed fashion, simplicity, and savings. The amount of Guests wearing it at the parks is incredible. You can't go a day at the park without seeing one.

What's more, it's sold in a variety of different colors. I don't even have all the colors pictured in this post. What I've noticed a lot of families doing is they all buy the shirt, but each member has chosen a different color.

While I may have reservations about "new retro," I do feel that Disney has done something remarkable with this line of shirts. The only problem I have with it is that I can't figure out what has more to do with its success; price or style.

Either way, this is a great product and a hopeful glimpse into the future of WDW merchandise.

Never Made It to the Seat

'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?--Play It!' was a perfect Disney-MGM Studios attraction. Combining the excitement and glamour of television with the thrill of competition, 'Millionaire' was a must-see for my family. The entire experience was a reminder of what the Studios used to be and the overall vibe was a great reminder of my trips there in the early '90s.

When you think of attraction props, you normally do not think of 'Millionaire,' but that's exactly what I'm talking about in this post. Since I don't have $10,000 dollars to buy a 'Horizons' ride vehicle, I will gladly settle for a piece of MGM-Studios that I've always had a soft spot for. This "prop" is one of the fastest finger consoles that Guests used to answer the fastest finger question as well as play along with the contestant in the hot seat.

I'm no electronics wiz, so I have no idea how to make this thing work again. However, when I do figure it out, I promise to post it.

I purchased this item from Mouse Surplus a few years ago. I visited their headquarters last year and took some great pictures of what they had to offer. Unfortunately, they were lost in a hard drive failure. However, just think of a giant warehouse with Disney's "junk" from various decades. That about sums it up.

Exclusivemation

Vinylmation is one of the best and most enduring products to come out of the Disney parks in a long time. Blending artistry, creativity, and of course, Mickey Mouse, Vinylmation has caught on and inspired a new age of Disney collectibles. Given the fact that I long adored vinyl toys, my wallet immediately opened up when they debuted in late 2008.

This particular Vinylmation was released on March 19th, 2009 as a Cast Member exclusive. I was working at the Studios that day and couldn't wait for my break so I could buy one and have it signed by it's artist, Randy Noble.

Told ya! I chatted with Randy for a bit and requested more EPCOT Center Vinylmations.

The figure came in a tin, rather than the typical box that all other Vinylmations are sold in.

~~I had heard that another Cast Exclusive was due out, but none have hit backstage shelves quite yet.~~ Nonetheless, Disney has released and are continuing to release enough Vinylmation series to keep you busy for a long time. This is one product that I hope will always stay a theme park exclusive and continue utilizing the Disney designs and characters of past and present. Disney has a real winner here and the creator(s) should be commended.

Lookin' Better

Today's post features an item that was a necessity for me to own. Why did I need to own it? Glad you asked! I will be making my first ever trip to Disneyland later this year and I had to make sure I would be doing it in style.

This is the West Coast version of the WDW shirt I recently posted (link). What I particularly like about the one I own is that it still looks brand new. Sure, the material is thin, but the design looks flawless. Another thing I like is that the length is perfect. T-shirts today are made of 100% cotton--as opposed to the 50% used for shirts in the '70s and '80s--which greatly reduces the length when dried. More so a nitpick than vital factoid, but I'd love to see shirts return to the materials and sizes of yesteryear.

The tag doesn't look like one typically found on Disney shirts of the '80s, which is why I'm placing it in the '70s. If you can prove otherwise, drop me a line.

Lookin' Good

I love Disney and I love vintage t-shirts. What a surprise that today's post features both of my desires. Straight out of the 1980s, this shirt is one of my favorite items due to its simple and stylish design.

With the current trend of retro and attraction specific merchandise, I think now is the time Disney returns to manufacturing plain, fun, and attractive shirts like the one pictured above. Many friends, Guests, and fans have lamented the reduction in quality of Disney merch, but things are starting to look up. Excuse the boldness, but I think this shirt would sell like hotcakes if it was brought out property wide tomorrow.

The tag reads medium, but fits more on the small side. For those of you looking to purchase the shirt, the measurements for a medium are: pit to pit-17.5" & neck to bottom-25".

You Are Not The First To Wear This...

Today's post features a shirt from the attraction 'Maelstrom,' which is found in the Norway pavilion at World Showcase. The shirt was released last year and as far as I know, is still being sold.

Every time a new attraction t-shirt comes along, I feel better about the future of Disney merchandise. The last 3 years have produced some great items and I hope the trend continues.

Off With His Head (UPATED)

Today's post is a quick one, but features some housekeeping I've recently done. First things first, this lovely Mickey Mouse button is from a series of similar looking buttons. The design is typically the same, a character's head in front of a single color background. Since I cannot confirm the decade these were released, I'll let one of my readers offer some insight.

"These came about in the eighties. They replaced the buttons that had the colored band around the edge with the character's head in the center."

Magic Fit

I'm very excited about today's post because it features at item I've wanted for a long time. This fantastic vintage t-shirt is a prime example of what simplicity and style can do. If only you could have seen my face when I received it as a Christmas gift.

Not only is it graced with the presence of the Mickey globe and Cinderella Castle, but the colors blend together beautifully. When's the last time you were looking cool in maroon and gold?

The tag reads Medium and it's the typical one seen on 1980s WDW shirts, so I'm going to classify it as coming from that decade.

Holiday Magic

What do I get for a friend who loves Disneyana just as much as I do and has a fondness for Peter Pan, jewelery, and the history of Walt Disney World? Well, you get her everything pictured above! Christmas just wouldn't be the same here at Disneyana World World Headquarters unless vintage WDW gifts are thrown into the mix of the DVDs, video games, and socks under my tree.

First up is this Imagineering exclusive Peter Pan pin. Released March 24, 2008 and limited to just 300. For more info on this pin please click here.

No WDW history buff or Disney library is complete without David Koenig's 'Realityland.' An informative and revealing look into the history of WDW. For a review of the book--and the only place you need to seek reviews for Disney books--please visit Imaginerding.

I believe these lovely clip-on earrings are from the 1970s. It's a shame more WDW merchandise isn't produce today that utilizes the Mickey globe.

Of course, my friend needed something to store her earrings in, hence a jewelry box from the attraction 'it's a small world.' When opened, the box plays the attraction's theme song. The measurements are 6"x4.25" and 2.45" deep.

There's a Great Big Fashionable Tomorrow

Today's post features two t-shirts which are currently offered at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Over the past couple years Disney has really stepped it up in the theme park merchandise department and have been releasing some amazing shirts. Many fans have begged for more attraction-specific merch and somebody listened.

The first t-shirt is from 'Big Thunder Mountain Railroad' and can be found in the Briar Patch store at the front of 'Splash Mountain.'

Moving over to the Agrabah Bazzar in Adventureland... you'll find this brilliant 'Jungle Cruise' t-shirt. I like how the design--for the most part-- stays away from the pre-faded and cracked look in favor of a clean, simple design.

The tag is from Disneyland which is odd to me because Disney usually brands their theme park merchandise with both CA and FL logos.

Even Epcot has joined in the attraction fun and has produced a 'Maelstrom' t-shirt. Look for that post whenever I remember to photograph it!

Quack!

If you enjoy things that look interesting, you'll love today's post. Part item and part my awkward photography, I'm excited to present this lovely Walt Disney World Donald Duck hat. This will also be the debut of my Polynesian pillows providing a somewhat tropical background.

Made of a straw/mesh combination, this hat has a lot going for it. Firstly, the beak--when squeezed-- makes a "quack" noise. While it can't match the lovely quackers sold in the parks today, it sounds just like any other toy from the 70s and 80s that made noise when squeezed.

The ribbon is also a wonderful touch and I'm amazed it has remained intact given that it's held on by a single staple.

The beak is also held together by staples. The black part of the eye are able to move and oddly enough, there are still long strands of hot glue sticking out from behind them.

I found this hat at a store that literally had things laying around everywhere for you to dig through. It was sandwiched between some other Disneyana and undoubtedly was probably smooshed somewhere in storage before its arrival at the store. I had a heckuva time trying to keep the head from collapsing while taking these pictures.

The tag is located on the inside and judging by the size, it has to be a kids large.

I've seen this hat in several pictures of WDW during the 1970s. Despite it's crude construction and awkward appearance, it's quite charming. While the Disney hats of today's park are no doubt more durable and realistic, there is something to be had with this Donald hat.

Simply put, it's playful and fun.

Seabutton Alpha

It's been one month with no new postings. How dare I call myself a blogger. What better way to get back into the swing of things with a great design from 'The Living Seas.' Thank goodness the 1980s was prime time for buttons or else we'd have no way to wear these awesome designs.

The back contains the usual price tag with © Walt Disney Productions, but the price has been savagely scratched away. I probably have another button made around the same time with a complete sticker on it, so I'll make a mental note to find it. The side of the button (sorry, no picture) reads ©1985 Walt Disney Productions.

It measures 3" across.

For Your Eyes and Ears Only

Today's post takes us back to April 30, 1982 for an update on EPCOT Center's World of Motion. This issue of Eyes and Ears details a quick ride through the show and offers some fun facts along the way. Let's explore this 8 page extravaganza...

Page 2 continues the World of Motion story and divulges information about the very first round of EPCOT Center site tours. Something I've noticed about the older Eyes and Ears is they give gradual updates on the progress of an attraction. The Eyes and Ears of today will only run stories about attractions that are 100% completed. Click on the picture and look for 'Other Information' to see what I'm talking about.

Page 3 offers an interesting look into the world of the 'Cast Crew.' A group of 5 people who seemingly do all of the backstage repair work. It's hard to fathom that at one point in Disney World's history it had only 5 people working to care for all backstage areas.

Page 4 informs us of a great Cast Member offer for Discovery Island.

The next couple pages are reserved for Cast Activities.

'Walt Disney World, The First Decade' which normally retails for $9.50 is available for Cast Members for just $6.

And the glorious 8th and final page. It's nice to see the only ads in here are by and for Cast Members. The Eyes and Ears of today have no classifieds and are full of ads from outside companies.

So Soft

It's not often that you find something from the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village or any of its predecessors that is anything more than a map or some form of ephemera. It's that exact reason why today's item is somewhat unique.

The Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village debuted on March 22, 1975 and remained under that name until 1977. That same year the name Walt Disney World Village took hold and it lasted until 1989. While the history after that point is somewhat drab --in my opinion at least-- there were two additional name changes finally resulting in what we now know as Downtown Disney.

When you think of all the vintage t-shirts one could purchase back in the day at WDW, you'd seldom think of someone buying one representing a place of mass commerce. It would be like going to Walmart and buying a shirt that says 'Walmart' on the front of it. However, this logo is just so simple that you can't help but want to wear it anyways. It seems like everything had a shirt back then.

I'm having a difficult time figuring out what decade this comes from. It's obviously the 70s or 80s. Any ideas?

Very Important Napkin

I've been going to Walt Disney World enough times to satisfy my next lifetime, but I've never been in any of the VIP lounges past or present. Although they were a bigger deal back in their day, these lounges are still a wonder to those of us who never had the chance to see one.

This napkin comes from the extinct Kodak VIP lounge from Journey Into Imagination. I'm a big fan of anything that comes from these lounges because not just anyone was granted access to these inner-attraction hideaways.

For being such a small item it sure is stylish. A perfect example of Disney keeping it simple on all fronts. Click on the picture and notice the edges of the napkin.

The only thing I'm not sure of about the item is what decade it's from. Any ideas?

Confetticot

It has been a while since I posted something from the 70s or 80s, so I figured why not get back to basics with two things I love to collect: vintage t-shirts and EPCOT Center.

While I don't have much to add about the t-shirt, I'll say it's one of the more appealing EPCOT Center shirts produced during the 80s. While I hate to take away from the numerous beautifully designed shirts of the era, I just adore the vibrant colors and sense of life this shirt delivers. You could almost slap the "Celebrate Today!" slogan on here and it would fit right in with 2009. But let's not really do that.

Even the tag is fun! EPCOT Center shirts from the 80s either had Artex tags or the nifty one pictured above. I was once told that just because an item had a © 1982 Walt Disney Productions did not mean it was actually made that year.

I received this as a gift for my birthday in June and wore it almost every time I went to EPCOT. So chances are if you went to EPCOT in June-August, you might have saw me wearing this. As a side note, this shirt was a BIG hit amongst Cast Members at the Japan pavilion. Further making it my favorite World Showcase country.

This shirt is a size large. I'm a pretty small guy and the shirt fits me perfectly. Just to give you an idea of the crazy range of fit for some vintage tees.

38 Years of Inspiration

Today's post features a brilliant new product line that has taken fans by storm and reaffirmed my belief that someone at Disney is listening.

The '1971 Collection' is, well... a collection of sorts (mainly t-shirts) that pays respect to the Disney World of old. Also included in this line are bobble heads, but there really isn't anything retro about them. The characters who made the bobble cut were Brer Rabbit, Big Al, Gus and Ezra from the Haunted Mansion, and Jack Skellington. You can view them by following this link. However, I'm more concerned with the t-shirt aspect so let's explore...

This was the first shirt I found from the collection and it includes that lovely MK logo which has been making a comeback this year. The style is only for girls and after seeing it on friends, I must say that it's quite stylish and fits nicely. The shirt caters to the "new vintage" look that is so popular these days, but it doesn't overdo it. The material looks and feels vintage as well. It's a perfect blend of new and old.

Fast forward a couple of months and a new gang started showing up around MK. First came the yellow Mr. Toad's Wild Ride t-shirt and for a limited time it was only available in the gift shop of Mickey's PhilharMagic. Oddly enough, every time I asked for the shirt in a medium, the Cast Member would either be unaware of the shirts existence, be surprised that Disney still had "old" Toad shirts, or tell me that it was left over from the old attraction and once it was gone, it was gone for good. This happened at both PhilharMagic and the Emporium. When I left Disney World for home these shirts still had their own section at the first entrance of the Emporium,

Finally a shirt for the guys!

Even later down the line came another Toad shirt, but this time it was only for girls again.

This Small World shirt came around the same time as the second Toad and it too is only for girls.

As I typed out this entry I was reminded of a shirt at the exit of Haunted Mansion that may or may not be from this collection. For the life of me I cannot remember whether it was or not. There is also a new Jungle Cruise t-shirt that has been seen at Zanzibar Traders, but I cannot confirm if it's from the same line.

I hope Disney continues to produce both more attraction specific and retro merchandise. I saw countless numbers of Guests wearing the yellow Toad shirt and I myself would get so many positive comments every time I wore it. Heritage and tradition is touted heavily at Disney and these shirts are a great way of showing it. Like my post title suggests, Disney World has 38 years of history, design, characters, and attractions to offer the consumer. With the 40th coming up real soon, I think the time is right for Disney to dust off its past and infuse it with the present.

They Must Be Listening...

For the past 8 months I was living out my dream of working at Walt Disney World. After an amazing time with 4-5 park visits a week, conversations with thousands of Guests, and some of the most amazing friends I've ever had, I'm finally home. I must admit, working and playing at Disney didn't leave a lot of time to blog, but I'm trying to make up for lost time.

Today's entry focuses on an interesting choice for one of WDW's 2009 logos. The Magic Kingdom image shown on the shirt above is no stranger to those of us who have been through the Emporium on Main Street in the past year or so. However, beneath that logo is an old friend that will hopefully be making a comeback.

That's right folks, it's the original WDW logo. My jaw dropped as I walked through the Emporium's main entrance only to be greeted by a large selection of MK 2009 merch complete with said logo. Everything from glasses, shirts, and hats were branded with our old friend. It was refreshing to see it placed on something that wasn't made to look retro. Crossing the old with the new was a welcome sight, but I'm hoping the old will win out one day.

Next up is the return of another familiar logo. This dandy MK logo has been absent from the parks for a while now and it too is making a comeback. While the new MK logo is fine and all, it just doesn't have the flair of its predecessors.

The hats are almost hidden amongst "current" WDW merchandise.

But the shirts are practically screaming for our attention.

At the beginning of the year these two displays were featured right as you walked into the Emporium's first entrance off of Main Street. Further complimenting this line would be the addition of the '1971 Collection' which I will discuss later. Although, towards mid-2009, both of these displays were disbanded and the items were dispersed in the Emporium.

I'd like to believe these items were big sellers because I saw a lot of Guests wearing the t-shirt or straw hat from this line. Whether or not most people bought it because of the old logo remains to be seen, but I'm willing to bet their subconscious recognized the style and simplicity of WDW's first and best logo.

RETROCOT

This year has been a great year for Disney World merchandise as it has seen a fair amount of retro clothes and accessories make its way onto store shelves. Ever since EPCOT's 25th anniversary, the retro merch craze has really taken off. As you can see in the picture above, these four shirts were the first wave of retro EPCOT Center shirts to be offered. The top two being based off of already existing shirts. There's even a hat!

Fast forward to 2009 and the second wave of retro EPCOT Center shirts have hit the World. The one above was inspired by this button design. (link)

This shirt features each 1982 pavilion logo with the addition of Horizons ('83) and The Living Seas ('86).

This last shirt looks like a throwback to the 1990s. It may not be as pleasing to the eye as the rest of the series, but at least it's somewhat original.

While all of these shirts may not be as flashy as their original counterpart, they are still a nice throwback to the past. Even though these designs were done a lot better in their day, these shirts are still able to draw attention from the passersby. That's the mark of not only brilliant design, but also a well put together t-shirt. These shirts get the same remarks my original EPCOT Center shirts do and there is a reason for that: because they look cool!

It's amazing how these logos and designs can withstand the test of time and continue to intrigue the mind and eye some 27 years later.

Continuing Tradition

I'm still without a computer down here in Orlando, but thanks to Brian over at Bigbrain-nc.com I have something to post. Brian has sent me some photos of WDW bags in the past and he comes through again with an excellent design and attention to detail....

"...at first glance it looks quite similar to the other ones you had published the images of on your blog, but there are differences the first one that jumps out at me is that the Mickey in this new design is the "cartoon" Mickey rather than a "parks" Mickey, then in the bottom right I see a gangster with a Tommy gun standing in front of an old time car, above him the Chinese Theatre and the Earful Tower, so this is a further extension of that series of bags that used the same style of design it would appear now all the way through the 1980's. Also noteworthy, it is a paper bag rather than a plastic one, paper continued to be used for the smallest size bag for years after the other sizes went to plastic."

No Refunds, Exchanges or Returns

Today's post features my favorite Disney theme park product line to come out in a long time. Vinylmation takes its cue from the fun world of vinyl toys and gives it a Disney flavor. Each 3" figure has the body of Mickey Mouse, but is customized with designs by different artists. I've used SMRT-1 to illustrate how the Mouse is incorporated into that equation.

In the tradition of vinyl toys, each figure comes in a box and with no indication of what you will get. The only way of knowing what figures come in a series is to look on the box for pictures of each figure. Fortunately Disney has a display case at each Vinylmation location that gives passer-bys a chance to become visually familiar with what they are about to plunk down $9.95 for.

Once the box is open the mystery continues. For you see, half the fun of vinyl toys is not knowing what you have until you open the packaging. In this case, the figure is inside of a silver bag that offers no preview of what's inside. Typically vinyl toys don't have "No refunds, exchanges of returns" plastered over their mystery packaging, but Disney makes sure not to upset their Guests' who may not be familiar with the concept.

What's also different from typical vinyl toy protocol is that Vinylmation offers a picture card of what figure is inside the packaging. That takes away a lot of the suspense, but just make sure not to look inside the box when opening yours up. However, the new series do not place the picture cards in plain view.

Each one has an artist signature on the bottom of the foot.

Each figure in Vinylmaltion Park #1 is inspired by something from a Disney theme park. Whether it be the Haunted Mansion or the Monorail, this series has got something for everyone. My favorite is SMRT-1.

Also in the tradition of vinyl toys, there is a chaser/mystery figure. Each set of Vinylmation contains 24 boxes. There is a complete set of 12 figures plus one chaser and the other 11 are different characters with 1 repeat. However, Disney has strayed away from telling the Guest how many are in each case, which is also unusual for a vinyl toy. Pictured below are both sides of the chaser.

Recently a new Vinylmation series called Urban has come out. These figures are not theme park related and are designed based on the artist's vision. I'd love to show you those, but I'm not a big fan and they have nothing to do with the parks. There are also 9" figures released for both the Urban and Parks series. I can't wait for the EPCOT Center one...

Lost and Found

I know my last post promised something merchandise related, but I had to put that on the back burner for a moment. Until then, here is a regular series that I'm hoping to sustain while down here in Florida. It will feature items from attractions and shows that were once lost and can now be found elsewhere on property. I hope you enjoy it.

Horzions opened on October 1, 1983 and was demolished in 1999. Many of the items from the attraction were either stored, sold, or thrown away. Much to the dismay of collectors, props from the attraction are seldom seen on the market. I think the popularity and mystique of Horizons are a big part of why Disney and private collectors do not like to offer much from this former Future World gem.

Getting back on track, the picture above is a show control unit from the Audio-Animatronics section of One Man's Dream over at Hollywood Stuidos. At first glance the control unit doesn't appear to be anything special. But upon closer inspection we find something interesting....

Nothing a little permanent marker can't fix! I'm not sure why this was blacked out, but somebody must have had a good reason to do so. I just like the fact that any show control unit could have been selected for this area, but Disney decided to go with Horizons.

What Will You Celebrate Wearing?

Normally I'm not a fan of current Disney World merchandise. I mean, how many cracked and faded t-shirts can we possibly stomach? However, things are getting better in the souvenir department at WDW. Today's post is a welcome return to simple and stylish products.

"What Will You Celebrate?" is the current Disney promotion and the best part about it is this Mickey Mouse confetti graphic. Products ranging from t-shirts, long sleeves, and bags all display this fun image. I bought the sweatshirt version primarily because it was a cold month here in Florida and Michigan isn't exactly known for it's beautiful weather.

Just above the pocket is the WDW logo and "Celebrate Everday!" slogan.

I just can't boast enough about how much I like this sweatshirt. It's such a simple design that grabs your attention. Until recently the only positive comments I've gotten for my Disney clothes have been the ones I wear from the 1980s. Now this sweatshirt gets all the compliments.

My next post will feature one of the most popular and creative products to hit WDW property in a long time.

Out and About

I'm so glad to be posting again! All I do is work, work, work, and go the parks. Today's post is a wonderful one because it features some very early WDW history.

The Walt Disney World preview Center was the first guest building to be built on Preview Blvd as it was called. It opened Jan 10th 1970 and closed Sep 30th 1971. Inside were renderings of the World, models, a `masterplan` and the original Project Florida film was shown too.

After closing, WDW Reservations moved in, and when they left the Amateur Athletic Union moved in in the mid 90`s and are still there.

Below are ariel views and interior photos of the center in it's heyday.

Now it's gone!

So as mentioned earlier, the Preview Center is now home to the Amateur Athletic Union. Below are pictures taken last week. I've included the same photo of Pluto and Goofy from above for comparison.

Here is what the land behind the Preview Center looks like today.

Visiting this historic WDW landmark is bittersweet. It's great to see the building has remained virtually untouched for 39 years, but at the same time it's sad to see it filled with small offices. However all of those offices are all filled with something Disney, so I guess it balances itself out.

There are also blinds covering the front windows unlike in the 70's when sunlight was allowed to pass through. I didn't have a chance to enter the building, but it looks great on the inside and a giant statue of Mickey Mouse is there to greet you.

I've got to send a big thank you to Martin Smith for descriptions and photographs. If you aren't familiar with Martin, just search for his "Ultimate Attraction Tribute Videos" in Google. I'm a huge fan of the Hoizons one.

Collector's Collection

Brian has shared some more scans from his collection of WDW bags. This particular one is from the 1970s and if memory serves me correct, there is a larger bag with the same design. But since I'm far from home and my collection, we'll have to wait for the exciting conclusion to my hunch.

The back of the bag looks identical, but the Disney World logo is a different color. It measures 5" x 7".

Brain was kind enough to share his scan of a 1986 WDW bag. Matching the look of previously posted bags, this one continues in the tradition of style and aesthetic appeal. What is unique about the item is that it unifies Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center, and the Walt Disney World Village. It also has the slogans "Together at Disney" & "The World's Greatest Resort," which I've never seen or heard until shown this bag.

The back is virtually identical.

I'll be posting more of Brian's collection over the next week or so. I've been busy adjusting to the College Program and haven't had a lot of time to post, so bare with me.

Today concludes the Christmas/New Years extravaganza. This item is a t-shirt from Epcot, but I'm not sure if it's from the 90s or 00s. Nonetheless, this shirt is stylish for its day.

I particularly enjoy the globes because they are reminiscent of the original WDW logo.

Here is the reverse side. When the shirt is worn it creates the illusion of movement from front to back.

Anybody know what decade this tag was prominent?

Let There Be Nightlight

Today's post brings more Christmas presents. The item pictured above is an EPCOT Center nightlight. The spaceman logo was prevalent during the early years of the park, but today there is not a trace of him on Disney property. The item measures 2" in diameter and has a texture like wax.

The light was made by Monogram Products Inc. which has now become Monogram International Inc. The company still exists today and it still makes products for Disney. To see their website check out this link.

Whoa! The past two weeks have been pretty busy around these parts. With Christmas over and the Disney College Program looming, I thought it was a good time to post some presents I got before they are packed up and taken to Florida. So let's begin with a vintage EPCOT Center t-shirt from 1982.

This shirt is another great example of the stylish and creative designs of WDW past. You've got brights colors, repeating elements, and a commanding logo. The person who previously owned this shirt said it was never washed for the past 26 years. It sure look and feels that way.

I don't even wear and an XL! Thankfully the sizes of the 1980s ran small.

Because it's almost Christmas I thought a post about shopping bags was in order. The bag pictured above is from 1978 and the design could not be any groovier. I can't remember the last time I saw such a sophisticated bag at Walt Disney World.

The back side is just as colorful and contains the 1978 copyright at the bottom. The bag measures 11 3/4" x 8 1/2".

The second, but much larger bag is from the same year. It measures 25" x 16". And for an early Xmas present, enjoy more photos of this classy design.

Admit One

Today's post features tickets from past to present. First up is a ticket from 1987 for admission to EPCOT Center. Don't you miss those Mickey globes...

This adult ticket cost $26.00 dollars with sales tax included. If this were a child's ticket, it would have cost $19.50.

Next up is a Magic Kingdom ticket from the same year.

I wonder why the Magic Kingdom ticket explains the transportation charge and not the EPCOT Center one. The opening day ticket for EPCOT Center had the tax notification. Of course, you will not be tested on that.

Lastly, this ticket from October 1, 2007 granted admission to see Marty Sklar speak about the history of EPCOT. I adore the attention to detail and the throwback to the tickets pictured above.

In case you are not familiar with or wasn't able to attend this event, I'll give you a brief overview. Those who signed up for Celebration 25 were given various items at a check-in table on October 1. One of those items was a ticket to see Marty Sklar speak at sessions in either the morning or afternoon.

The presentation was full of EPCOT Center concept art, photos, stories, and music. Mr. Sklar did a wonderful job of taking the audience through the development of EPCOT through present. No photos or video were permitted so this event will probably live on through memory. It was great to hear someone who not only knew Walt Disney, but also helped to develop his city of the future. It was also fun to sit next to Martin Smith and watch the glee in his face as rare concept art was shown.

Besides Disney World, I love to collect vintage t-shirts. When the opportunity arises to collect a vintage Disney t-shirt, I always jump at the chance. Too bad this one does not fit me!

This t-shirt comes from the 15th anniversary of Walt Disney World. I'd assume this was won by the ticket prize system set up for the celebration. The shirt is twenty-two years old and looks pretty good for its age. For an even cooler vintage tee, check out the shirt made for WDW's 10th anniversary.

Oh, here's the problem, I don't wear an XL.

The Land of Fantasy and Tomorrow

Another day, another Disneyland post card. I really enjoy this "jumbo" post card because it's a great shot of the Skyway going through the Matterhorn and of the Submarine Voyage making it's voyage. This thing measures about 6 1/4 x 4 1/4.

Anyone have info on when this was produced?

More post cards from the happiest place on Earth. This one displays the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle. This picture is interesting because the photographer captured half of an oncoming horse. Maybe it was on accident or maybe it was to add atmosphere.

Dog Gone

As advertised, more Disneyland postcards This time it's everyone's favorite dog, Pluto. For being such a happy pup, this picture sure makes him look sad and confused.

But wait just a minute! The description in the bottom left corner gives us a clue as to why Pluto is so upset. He can't find Mickey and Goofy. I should have guessed that was his problem. He should just go ride the Matterhorn and realize he lives at Disneyland and be happy.

I'm still in search of a decade for this postcard. Can you please help?

Today's post features a postcard I found in an antique store not too long ago. There is only one problem here, I can't find a lot of information about it. I would love to know what decade this was made and if there is anything unusual or fun about what is shown. You see, I have a couple more postcards from Disneyland lined up for this week and I need your help! So, my fellow DL bloggers, I need you to shower me with knowledge.

But let's start with what I do know. The following images are of Sleeping Beauty Castle, Mark Twain Steamboat, Jungle Cruise, and the entrance to Tomorrowland. By the look of TL, this postcard has to be from the late '60s-some time in the '70s.

The backside is what gives this postcard its charm. I prefer a postcard to have writing on it because it's great to see what people say about the place they visited. This particular person loved the Submarine Voyage. And what's even more fun about these people is they wrote to someone who lives one street away from my grandfather. The postmark is 29 Jun 1978, but that does not help me solve the exact time this postcard was sold.

As I said earlier, this came from an antique store. The beauty of finding postcards there is you have to dig (or sort) through stacks of other meaningless postcards until you hit pay dirt. Of course, what fun would collecting be if it offered no surprises or required no effort.

The beauty of the Contemporary Resort; A structure so compelling, majestic, and demanding of our attention. A true marvel amongst fantasy. Too bad that "thing" currently being built next to it spoils those feelings. However, let's rejoice in today's post. This tile is from the 1970s and is a great example of early WDW merchandise.

The back is made of cork and measures 6" x 6".

I really miss the simple designs that used to litter WDW. The original Contemporary logo has always been one of my favorites. I'm not sure how well something like this would sell today or this was ever a hot seller, but it's simple and I like that. Check out the little man sailing in the water.

I wonder how this would look in my shower wall...

Guide Maps: 1981

Today's post features a Magic Kingdom guide book from 1981. This was released during Walt Disney World's 10th anniversary and the one I have is from Winter/Spring '81. I have little to add about the map, but there are a few things I'll chime in with...

The EPCOT Center Preview is located in the bottom right hand corner of Main Street. It will open that Summer.

My favorite tip was always that you have to devote 2-3 days to see the parks. Try telling that to my family.

Maps like these are sorely missed today. I can't remember the last time I looked at a current Disney World map and thought it was fun and colorful. I'm also fond of guide books made before EPCOT Center because they show how serene and simple the resort used to be. I don't know what it is, but when I look at old guide books I get the feeling that things were appreciated more back then.

You can find this guide book and ones just like it all over eBay. Don't pay more than $5-6 dollars for one because these are not hard to come by.

I got accepted into the Walt Disney World College Program today! As you can imagine, I'm incredibly excited to be working at the place I love.

So what does this mean for us!? Well, it means that I'm going to update as often as possible before my departure date. Don't fear though, I will still post while in Florida, but it won't be items from my collection. Those have to stay at home.

Today's post features a 1983 pin from Journey Into Imagination. Like all EPCOT Center pavilions, cast members wore pins representing the companies who sponsored the attraction. The picture below illustrates my point.

The only real information I could find on this pin was from PinPics.com. If you'd like to view the page for this pin then follow this link. For a simiar version of this pin, follow this link. These early sponsor pins are quite collectible as they were only worn by cast members who worked at the attraction. You can find some on eBay every now and again and they are usually affordable. I don't think I've seen one go over $30 dollars.

The flip side is a double pin back.

Eat 'Em Up Tigers!

A couple weeks ago a video store by me had a going out of business sale. Oddly enough, this store had more VHS tapes than it did DVDs, which is probably why it went under. Anyway, I immediately went to the kids section in hopes for something Disney. Boy, did I hit pay dirt. Almost every Walt Disney Home Video in existence was there. Today's post features one of the many I picked up.

The first motion picture created exclusively for The Disney Channel, on which it aired on October 9, 1983; the film had a brief theatrical release only in Detroit beginning on June 8, 1984.

Tiger Town follows a boy named Alex (Justin Henry) who can't help but love his slumping Detroit Tigers. His favorite player on the team, veteran Billy Young (Roy Scheider), is a shadow of his former self during the last season of his career. However, once Alex's dying father teaches him to never stop believing what's in his heart, Alex takes that mindset to Tiger Stadium. The movie then follows the Tigers sudden run to the top where they must play the Baltimore Orioles to win the pennant.

As a Metro Detroiter, I couldn't get enough of this film. The most memorable part for me was the all access filming of old Tiger Stadium. Standing for 97 years, Tiger Stadium was host to many classic players, events, and teams. Sadly, three-fourths of the stadium has been demolished and all that remains is the field and the section behind home plate. The movie also features appearances by local Detroit legends and various locations around town.

One year after this film was released the Tigers won the 1984 World Series. Truly magical.

World Adventure

I know it's been a while since my last update, but school has started again and you know how that goes...

Today's item features a grand opening ticket from EPCOT Center. I've posted one before (link), but that ticket doesn't have the stub attached. I've received a lot of comments and e-mail about how much one of these tickets are worth if unused. Well, now I have the official answer based on two previous auctions. You can expect this ticket to sell anywhere from $150-200. However, if you throw in the silver envelope, letter, and packaging this was sent with in the mail, you could be counting more dollars.

If you noticed the serial code on the front of the ticket it reads #000000. This is because my ticket has been voided. Look at the reverse side of the stub and you'll see "VOID." This greatly reduces the value of the ticket because it's technically not in the original state. Although I'd sure like to enter EPCOT someday using a grand opening ticket. The ticket is © 1981 Walt Disney Productions.

Look what was sitting amongst clutter at a thrift store just waiting to be salvaged. It's everybody's favorite extinct character, the Orange Bird. For more info on the bird, we'll turn to Widen Your World.

"Walt Disney Productions entered into negotiations with the Florida Citrus Commission (represented as Florida Citrus Growers in the park) for an FCC-sponsored Walt Disney World attraction in 1967. A contract was signed on October 22, 1969, formalizing the FCC's underwriting of a "tropical bird show" at a cost of $3 million. The following year WED Enterprises created the Orange Bird character to serve as the FCC's official mascot in promotional campaigns. Into the early 1980s he was an ubiquitous citrus icon, particularly throughout the Sunshine State where he appeared in television advertisements, print media and scores of souvenir outlets. But excepting a very few staged events, the only place in the world where anyone could actually meet the Orange Bird was at the doorstep of the Sunshine Tree Terrace."

After the FCC/Disney split in 1986 his identity became increasingly less tied to the citrus industry itself and more closely linked to the state of Florida at large as an iconic character; a majority of the merchandise released with his image (or made in his image) was accompanied by the name Florida in capital letters. Although Orange Bird merchandise remained a staple of citrus grove stands and tourist area t-shirt shops well into the 1990s, his star was clearly fading. Dave Ensign will be sharing his photo essay on the Orange Bird's depiction at various roadside venues with WYW in the near future."

Orange Bird merchandise is pretty rare. You can find him on eBay, but it's either newer products or small figurines. It's certainly a rare thing to find Orange Bird in a local antique or thrift shop.

Based on the look of the item, I'd say the tray is from the 1970s. It measures 11" across.

Strike It Up!

Today's post features another gem from my favorite record store. Not often do I buy anything Disneyland, but there are times when I hate to pass something up. The Disneyland Band was one of these items. Released in 1969 under Buena Vista Records, the album contains twenty-two songs (many of them Disney originals) and features an appearance by the Dapper Dans.

I'll be the first to admit that I have only basic knowledge of Disneyland and will never attempt to make you think otherwise. I'm also feeling lazy right now so I'll refer to the backside of the album for information about who the Disneyland Band is and what they do/did.

The album is actually very fun to listen to. It makes you feel as if Main Street, U.S.A. is right in your house. I'm not familiar enough with what is played now at Disneyland, but assuming the set list has changed, this album is a great taste of what was played there in the late 60s. Overall, a nostalgic sound that induces happy memories.

What a wonderful trip to the record store. I'd known about this record's location for a while, but was too lazy to drive 25 minutes to buy it. Well, I finally did and I couldn't be happier. While searching for more information about the Walt Disney World Adventureland Steel Band I found an excellent description from Widen Your World.

This patio was the original performance space for Adventureland's long-lived J.P. and the Silver Stars steel drum band. The group helped reinforce the atmosphere area and even contributed a performance, "Adventureland Delight," to the 1973 album A Musical Souvenir of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. They moved down into Caribbean Plaza later on, opening up the octagon for live bird exhibitions and, finally, merchandise sales. The lady with the maracas did not endure into the 1980s, ultimately leaving the men to beat out island sounds on their own. Before she departed, however, the band cut a 1976 album, Walt Disney World's Adventureland Steel Band, which is now an extremely rare park souvenir.

The album contains 12 tracks of existing and original music. One of the more notable songs is it's a small world. Supposedly this was recorded at Walt Disney World, but I'm not sure if that means live or in a controlled environment.

Here is a close up of the back cover. This lengthy description recalls the history of steel drum music and then relates it to the Adventureland Steel Band.

For being a steel drum record, I really enjoyed listening to it. The songs were relaxing and sounded wonderful. Considering this band no longer plays at the Magic Kingdom, the album is a sad reminder of the great music that once played live in Adventureland.

Since I love to show places where I find Disneyana, I thought you all would enjoy a shot of the Disney section at the local record store. That Cinderella record is pulled out on purpose so you can get a sense of how long that shelf is. There are plenty of great (and weird) Disney records to be had at this place. There are some Disneyland ones still there for a lucky collector to find.

Sitting on top of that shelf of records was a box of Disney 45s. Something I hadn't discovered until this recent trip. The most prized possession in the box unfortunately did not fall into my possession. For $20 I could have bought the New York World's Fair 45 of it's a small world. Thanks to everyone who sent e-mails in response to the retro EPCOT Center map contest. I got a lot of wonderful responses. The 5 winners have been picked and contacted.

It was nice to hear from everyone who participated. There was a lot of positive feedback when it came to anything 1980s and or EPCOT Center. Luckily for those people I've exclusively been collecting EPCOT for the past couple months.

On a side note: this marks the 100th post. I wish I had something grand or wise to say, but I'm afraid I don't.

What would a Disney celebration or birthday be without a coin? Well, Disneyland's 25th birthday in 1980 was definitely no exception. I believe this originally came in a plastic case with blue felt surrounding the coin. I've seen a lot of coins from the 1980s (this one included) that have the same case.

The back of the coin has Walt Disney's dedication of Disneyland. There is currently an auction (link) on eBay for this same coin that has something different written on the back. The coin measures 1 1/2 inches and is ©Walt Disney Productions.

It's a 33 and 1/3 Long World

As with every post about the subject/place, this one is for my Disneyland peeps. Last week I made a trip to the antique store and along with the Polynesian tiki mug, I found this record.

Narrated by Disney Legend Winston Hibler, this "magnificent full-color illustrated book and long-playing record" takes you through an audio tour of the attraction. The book is 12 pages long and features pictures of each scene/country in chronological order. Underneath each picture is the exact narration heard on the record so you can follow along. The inside cover is ©1964.

Pictured above and below are two different versions of the record. Does anybody happen to know why there are two variations?

Something else I found interesting was the opening narration. It mentions the Tower of the Four Winds statue which was constructed for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair. However the album cover is of the Disneyland version of small world, which did not feature the statue.

The record is ©1966 Walt Disney Productions. That copyright is in the bottom right corner of the cover and is very hard to see.

Today was an amazing trip to the local antique store. Besides eBay, antique stores are the best place to find Disneyana. This mug from the Polynesian is the biggest and funniest thing I've bought in a while. Measuring about 6' tall and 5' wide, this mug is double sided and made of glass. This is the angry side.

Here is the happy side. Notice the different logos above each face. I'm not sure what decade this is from and would love any input from someone who knows.

One of the most common and most popular Disney World items to collect has got to be Eyes and Ears. "Prepared By And For The Walt Disney World Cast," this newsletter helped to keep cast members updated and informed about happenings around property. Considering I love to know every little factoid about WDW, Eyes and Ears is a great thing to own. Things like when an attraction laid concrete or when the cast member softball tournament will occur, are just some of the obscure bits of information E&E can offer.

The issue presented is from May 5, 1983 and its cover story details the construction of Horizons. The article gives a basic overview of the attraction and lists dates for future phases of construction. For example, did you know on July 5, 1983 that vehicle instillation for Horizons began. I hope you didn't know that, but thanks to this newsletter you do now. It's those tidbits that make Eyes and Ears a delight.

The other front page story highlights the career of Walt Disney Productions animator,director, and one of "Walt's Nine Old Men," Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman.

Throughout the next 7 pages, various stories, announcements, and classified ads are presented. Some of the stories pictured above include a seafood festival at the Walt Disney World Village and Something Wicked This Way Comes becomes a movie and radio drama.

"It Takes People" highlights extraordinary cast members.

Some issues of Eyes and Ears are better than others, but most offer fun details and great historical documentation. There are always issues up for auction and most go for relatively cheap prices. More important issues such as the opening of a theme park or an attraction can fetch upwards of $15-20 dollars.

Before cellphones made it easy to keep track of phone numbers, address books were the way to go. This particular one belonged to my sister and still has the numbers and addresses of her childhood friends. My parents bought this for her during a family trip to Disney World in 1986. I recently found it in my basement while looking for other Disney souvenirs of years past.

The inside presents nothing spectacular, but does provide plenty of space to write.

The book measures about 3' x 4 1/2' and the ends of each page are gold colored.

I'm home!

For the past month and a half I've been in Europe on a school related trip. This was my first time traveling there and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Coincidentally, this experience had its fair share of Disney sightings. I took pictures in every country of something Disney related and I hope you find it as interesting and fun as I did.

The fun begins in Paris. This advertisement is for not only the 15th anniversary of Disneyland Paris, but for a new attraction. As Mickey unwraps the gift he is surprised by the ad located to the right...

Stitch Live! opened on March 22nd and features the same technology you'd find at Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor and Turtle Talk with Crush. These two ads were prominently featured throughout the subway and they also helped to remind me that I did not have enough time to visit DLP. Another Disney ad that was sort of prominent were for Tower of Terror. I say sort of because all of them were ripped up and barely visible.

An advertisement for Le Journal De Mickey. This ad foreshadows a lot of what I will find during the rest of the trip. By this I mean Donald Duck. Europeans apparently love Donald Duck because he is everywhere. Personally, I prefer Mickey Mouse.

Now we move to Germany. This June issue of Micky Maus magazine captures the fever of the 2008 Euro Cup. It's always wonderful when two things I love are combined: soccer and Disney. The magazine basically consists of comic strips and bits about soccer. Characters featured are Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, Daisy Duck, and Gundel Gaukeley.

More Donald Duck! This stand in Dachau was chock-full of books.

Now we move to Czech Republic. This Pinocchio marionette came from Prague and no, it's not officially licensed by Disney. There were numerous marionette stores in the city and each one had a Pinocchio. Oddly enough, a lot of stores had masks for sale. One of them being the creepiest Mickey Mouse mask you will never see. You'll never see it because I didn't have my camera that day. Although for your sanity, I think it's best you don't see it.

This interesting ad was found in Budapest, Hungary. Gooffy.

Zurich, Switzerland was home to this window display of Donald Duck. I'm not sure this dress is very fashionable.

And finally a Gacha capsule toy machine from Venice, Italy. I've made a post before about Gacha toys (link) and you can find these all over the world. Every machine I found in Venice had Pooh and Hello Kitty. Both of those characters were very popular throughout the city.

Now for the best part of the entry...

To commemorate the one year anniversary of Disneyana World (July 5th) I want to give back to the visitors. During Celebration 25 I was fortunate to grab a huge stack of limited edition retro EPCOT Center maps. Now it's time to give some of those away to the people who keep this blog going. My trip is coming to an end and I'll get back to blogging soon.

I just read the news about Pleasure Island and it's incredibly disappointing the Adventurers Club will be closing. There were a lot of old attraction props I was hoping to take pictures of and post here. Oh well... lets hope the prop warehouse at Hollywood Studios will stay open long enough for me to take pictures there.

Speaking of pictures... I've got some very interesting Disney related ones from my travels here in Europe. I can't wait to post those.

When I come back I'll have some goodies to give away. I'm doing this to mark my one year anniversary of blogging. So if you weren't able to attend EPCOT's 25th and snatch one of the commemorative maps, I've got you covered.

Mapped Out

Today's post is all thanks to Ryan at Main Street Gazette. He made a post about Indiana Jones and included a picture of the map above. After a couple minutes of thinking about it I realized this was the same poster I knock over all the time in my basement. You see, this poster isn't on a wall in my house, it's laying against a wall that is very close to stairs. And whenever I go to run upstairs, I usually run into this frame. Thankfully I was reminded that this poster was from Disney World or else I'd still be swearing at it.

The Adventure Outpost is the name of the gift shop located outside of the Epic Stunt Spectacular show. Back in the day it used to sell (and probably still does) hats, whips, fake snakes, guns, jackets, t-shirt, etc... I use "back in the day" because I haven't been to this shop since 2003 and I can't remember seeing anything except toys and guns. I'm not sure if this poster is still available for purchase.

Figurable Action

Continuing the Indy goodness is this theme park exclusive action figure.

There were two waves of action figures and this one comes from the first. Released in 2000/2001, this figure was exclusively sold at Disneyland and Disney World. Luckily for me, by 2003 this figure was still in the merchandise carts outside of the Epic stunt show.

I have to admit, the second wave version of Indiana Jones is a lot better. It looks more like Harrison Ford and the accessories are cooler. As for the Marion action figure... that's a different story.

Originally I thought I had no other Indy-Disney memorabilia to show you, but thanks to a fellow blogger I am suddenly reminded of an item in my basement. In fact, I usually knock it over every time I'm down there.

Since a new Indiana Jones movie hits theaters this Friday I thought it was an appropriate time to dig out all the Disney-Indy merchandise I have.

Before MGM-Studios opened I had already been introduced to and obsessed about Indiana Jones and Star Wars. I was still very much a child back in 89 when I heard about this new park that featured the movies I watched everyday at home. Because I was so young and because MGM seemed to encompass all I loved at the time, the park has always had a special place in my heart. Heck, I even loved the TV special where the New Kids on the Block went to MGM. I still have a copy of it on VHS and I still love it. You can absolutely quote me on that.

Nostalgia aside, the first item in today's post is a white t-shirt from the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. This shirt was my favorite to wear during the family trips to Disney World. Too bad its a kids large or else I'd still be wearing it.

And heres a picture of me inside the Odyssey restaurant at Epcot '94 wearing the Indy shirt. I also have other pictures of me wearing this shirt in 93, so that's probably the year my parents bought it for me. Sadly, I don't think I have the Star Tours hat anymore.

As opposed to the first one, this design is a better representation of the attraction. Three different element of the show are represented. The bottom right is ©Disney/LFL.

The color is a creamy vanilla. However, it doesn't taste like it.

35 Times & DisneBay

I have to apologize for the lack of posts this month. I've been having quite a bit of personal and medical issues. Nothing too serious though, so don't worry about your favorite Disney World memorabilia blogger.

In preparation for an upcoming trip I decided that I needed a watch. I originally wanted a Mickey Mouse watch, but could not find one that fit (small wrists) or one that satisfied my style (I'm on the cutting edge of fashion). Then I checked for a watch from Disney World, but the only one I could find was from the 25th anniversary and none were on the cheap. So...

I searched for my third choice: Disneyland. I must admit, I'm very happy with the watch I ended up with. I'm a sucker when it comes to anniversaries and birthdays celebrated at Disney parks.

The watch comes from Disneyland's 35th anniversary which occurred on July 17, 1990. It was produced by Lorus Quartz and is © Disney. The band is black and made from plastic.

Now I'd like to shift gears over to an item that was recently sold on eBay. The auction was for a puzzle from EPCOT Center's Horizons pavilion. The puzzle is 200 pieces and featured the image of the mural once found at the end of the attraction. Not only did the auction contain all 200 puzzle pieces, but it also came with the original box.

Printed on the bottom left corner of the box is the date 1983. That was the year in which the attraction opened to the public. The only other time I've seen a complete Horizons puzzle was last year when a still shrink wrapped one sold for a hefty price.

Among Disney World collectors it's no secret that anything from Horizons is rare. This particular item strikes me because it features Robert McCall's incredible Mural. It's very unusual for an attraction's mural to have merchandise based off of it.

So what was the final selling price? This sold for $158.05 and although I bid on it, I lost.

Following in Disney World's tradition of glass in the 1970s, here are four coasters.

Each one represents a land of the Magic Kingdom and features an image of an attraction/place found in those areas. If you look above the white Disney World logo, you will see the name of each land in gold lettering. Each coasters measures 3 1/4".

These coasters appear on eBay from time to time. They don't go for very much money and are an inexpensive addition to any collection.

I'm very happy to update everyone on my Ten Years and Counting post. If you recall, the Animal Kingdom book I presented had writing on the inside cover that hinted an Imagineer might have owned it at one point. Well, thanks to a reader, the mystery seems to be solved.

Sneak Preview

Yes, I know this scan is a little bit awkward, but that's life when your scanner is small and your photo retouch skills are minimal. My problems aside...

Here is an EPCOT Center Construction News bulletin from 1982. This particular one pertains to the Family Construction Preview set to take place on Labor Day, September 6. Because the workers indicated a large number of family members previewing the park, Disney extended the hours from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. And just to clarify, the letter is not white, it's turquoise.

To coincide with the information above, I present a little slice of David Koenig's book Realityland: True-Life Adventures at Walt Disney World.

"As he had done on the Magic Kingdom, Dick Nunis invited the construction workers to bringer their families to the job site on Sundays and on Labor Day. Trams transported the guests around property, where they could view unfinished attractions as well as models and films depicting what they would look like when they finally were finished."

The reason I purchased the newsletter was to compliment another item I had already owned...

This ticket was sold to me by someone who was a construction worker at EPCOT Center. If I remember correctly, his job was laying pipe. Anywho... I'm led to believe this ticket was used on one of the preview days based on the fact the seller told me he used it then. The only problem I have with the ticket is that it does not indicate how many family members are attending. The newsletter says the face of your ticket must indicate the number of family members. I don't see any numbers.

This person could have possibly went alone, but I'm not entirely sure. There was another ticket that came with the one pictured above, but it's identical.

The first is a sticker for Disney's Wildlife Conservation Fund. The fund was started in 1995 and continues to this day. The following quote is from the fund's website...

"The Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund (DWCF) was established in 1995 as a global awards program for the study and protection of the world's wildlife and ecosystems. It provides annual awards to US nonprofit conservation organizations working alongside their peers in other countries."

Considering the crazy time we live in, this is a valuable effort on Disney's part to preserve our natural world. If anyone out there is/has been involved with the program, I'd love to hear about it.

This second item is a pamphlet for the wildlife fund. It's a basic overview of the program and shows what parts of the world Disney helps to protect. In terms of a date, this was printed 2/99.

10 Years and Counting... (Updated)

In honor of Animal Kingdom's 10th anniversary, here is a book from 1998.

The Making of Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park takes a look at the design, development, and completion of the 4th gate. Coming in at 192 pages, this book is overflowing with pictures, concept art, quotes, factoids, and cartoon versions of Joe Rohde. It even has 4 pages dedicated to the names of each member of Imagineering and Operations who worked on Animal Kingdom.

The book was authored by Melody Malmberg who used to be a full-time show writer for Walt Disney Imagineering. This was her first book.

I must admit, I wasn't particularly excited when I received this book. However, the park has really grown on me and I'm glad to have this in my possession. Rather than trying to scan parts of this book, I'm going to assure you it contains a wealth of information. If anyone would like to see scans or have me look something up, please ask.

The only thing that really irks me about this book is the inscription on the inside cover. I tried to e-mail the person I bought this from and have them explain what it means. Unfortunately, they never responded. Jenna, if you are out there, where are you in this book?

Out and About

Hello everyone. I know its been a while, but after next week I will start posting regularly. To hold you all over I will share some Disneyana I found over the weekend at a local antique store.

Pictured above is a Mickey Mouse guitar. I'm not sure of the exact decade, but I'm hoping some of you will know.

Very cool MATTEL logo on the top of the guitar.

This Mickey Mouse Club doll was from the same booth as the guitar.

Here is a cross promotion for Clorox and the 1967 re-release of Snow White. The grand prize was a chance to visit any city in the world for 14 days with all expenses paid.

This last item was something I've never seen before. It's a stand for Donald Duck Soda complete with packaging. It's from the 1950s and upon further research I found some websites and descriptions.

"But those outside the Disneyana collectibles world may be a little less aware of Donald's other foray into the drink market. The Chattanooga, TN-based General Beverages Inc. used our gregarious quacker's visage for its first-ever line of fruit-flavored sodas during the early 1950s, and Donald Duck Soda also became one of the pioneering General Beverage sodas to be canned.

Initially, the soda just came in bottles, but as the can movement began sweeping the soft drink industry, General Beverages rode the wave. First, the brand appeared in cone-top cans, then briefly in punch-tab cans. Later, Salem, MA-based Commercial Beverage Company returned to the bottle format, selling Donald Duck Soda in bottles that came with cork-lined metal bottle caps."

A Gift of Glass

What a splendid gift tray from the 1970s. If decorative plates is your thing, then have I got the post for you.

Out of all the time I've been collecting, these plates seem to pop up everywhere. Whether it be at antique stores, rummage sales or eBay, I always find one. This is actually the second one I own. I had to have this one because until I bought it, I had never seen one of these trays in it's original box. The first one I bought was just the tray, no box.

Another reason I bought this was because it has never been opened. Notice the gold ribbons are still intact.

The original price sticker is still attached.

Here is the one I originally owned. As you can tell, it pales in comparison to the boxed version.

Finding glassware from Walt Disney World isn't actually that tough. I've found tons of it and most of it originates from the 70s. I guess that must of been popular back then.

Lastly... I have updated the 100 Mill post. Thanks to the magic retouching hands of Major Pepperidge over at Gorillas Don't Blog, the photo of 100 cast members standing in front of the train station looks brand new.

Out and About (Part 2)

Welcome back for the exciting conclusion of Out and About.

If you can ignore the black streamers, you will find a beautiful piece of Disneyana. It's a thin wax paper that was used to wrap bread. Lastly... an item that had escape my memory until late. I'd say about 5 years ago, I found a game at the Museum that was absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, it's long gone. The game I'm referring to is called Castle Coaster and is made by SEGA. I've included it in my post because not only does it look like Cinderella Castle, but according to the Museum it has some kind of connection to Disney.

An employee (and Marvin's son), told me Castle Coaster cost $300,000 dollars to produce and only 8 of them were made. While I can't verify that info, I can tell you that it was made in 1995.

This was displayed on the game when it resided at the Museum. I'm actually not sure how Disney is connected with it. Can you make sense of this?

Out and About (Part 1)

Today's post marks the first entry in my "Out and About" series. The purpose is to showcase areas of the country (normally Michigan) that have a connection to Disneyana. Whether it be antique stores, garage sales, or in the case of today's post, arcades.

Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is a place where pop culture literally surrounds you. Every square inch of this museum/arcade is covered with "stuff." Until recently, I never noticed the connection it has to Disney. While I'll touch base on that in a bit, heres a description of the place from it's website. (link)

"No one understands hyper-compression like Marvin Yagoda. His museum is sandwiched between halves of a shopping mall north of Detroit in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Inside he's packed dense masses of historical and modern arcade machines, sideshow wonders, fortune tellers, automatons, and curiosities. Marvin is a 60-something year old pharmacist, and Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is a hobby that went out of control."

To sum up what this place entails, it's an arcade that has been bombed with pop culture. Here you will find antique games, current video games, props, signs, junk, treasures, and so much more. What's so great about all of the bric-a-brac found here is that it's ever changing. You may find a turn of the century game from England and then a couple months later find a World War II game from 1942.

So I hope you enjoy my photographic documentation of the Museum and how it relates to Disney. I tried to shy away from the flash on my camera so I could capture the atmosphere.

Pushing Your Buttons

Once again, my EPCOT Center bias is showing.

These three buttons were given out during the construction phase of EPCOT Center. If you notice, each button has a different slogan representing the various stages of EPCOT Center's completion process. Also notice as the buttons progress, the size and style of each also progress. At this time I'm not sure if these were limited to certain people or handed out to everyone, but when that answers comes I will post.

I used to see this button up for auction all the time. So if this is something you want to own, eBay definitely has you covered. Would anybody happen to know if this was given away before World Showcase's completion?

This button leaves me clueless. It's obviously from a reunion, but that's all I know about it.

This photo was taken at the EPCOT exhibit inside Innoventions.

I feel bad for the lack of information associated with these buttons. Normally I like to have background stories or information. I had an e-mail with information from the person who sold me these, but it has mysteriously vanished. So if you sold me this set of buttons, please get in touch.

I'm very excited about my next post. Not only will it be fun to look at, but it's my first "on-assignment" post.

Wildest Bag In The Wilderness

Today's post will be a quick one.

Here is a paper bag from Fort Wilderness. It may not be flashy or valuable, but small items like these aren't common Also, considering it's from 1978, the condition is excellent.

However, the smell is a different story.

I'm always amazed to find the things people saved over the years. Before this age of collectible everything, who would've thought to save a paper bag from Disney World?

100 Mill (UPDATED)

On October 22, 1979, Walt Disney World welcomed its 100,000,000 millionth guest.

According to what I can remember (I lost my notes), 100 people wore these badges on their costumes to celebrate the occasion. I'm still not clear on whether or not every state was represented. As noted below, the badge was a modified golf tag from 'The Golf Resort.'

*UPDATE*
A Cast Member who appears in this picture shared their memory of that day...

"They needed one more person who was actually native from Florida. I have the pin still. it was early in the morning just before park opening and I remember running down main street to get there in time.

We only wore it for that photo and greeting the 100,000,000 guest and was never worn again and I still have it.

BTW- they were modified golf bag tags used at the (then) Disney Golf resort at the time, that is why there is a cut hole in the top."

Beauty aside, there is one thing I want to point out. On the far left and right sides there are drums. Those appear to be the same ones featured in the below picture of grand opening celebrations

A New Sensation (UPDATED)

Today I'm reaching out to my Disneyland peeps.

Here is a cast member exclusive given out for the completion of New Fantasyland in 1983. I'll skip the history lesson because I want to focus on the item itself.

There is also a blue version of the invitation. Check out The New Fantasyland posts at Vintage Disneyland Tickets for more information.

There are considerable differences between the two items. First off, my version has purple text and the other has blue. Secondly, the blue version has an opening paragraph of original material, mine has the Fantasyland dedication as delivered by Walt Disney in 1955. Thirdly, the blue version offers immediate family members a chance to visit the new land, mine only extends to a guest. Lastly, the dates to experience Fantasyland are different on each. The blue version lists Sunday, June 26, 1983, while mine lists the following...

"You and your guest are invited to participate in the "Rededication" of Fantasyland on May 26 or 31, 0r June 1 or 2, 1983. Dedication ceremonies will begin at 8:30 p.m. in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle."

Somebody commented on VDT's blog that the re-dedication occurred on May 25. Why so many dates are listed... I'm not sure. However, a reader recently passed along some great information about the various dates.

"To clarify all the various dates and help you understand what you have...

The New Fantasyland re-dedication ceremony took place on the morning of May 25th (I was in the ceremony--and it was on the same day Jedi opened--busy day for me)

There were also 4 private Cast Member previews of the new land, after regular park hours on the May 26, 31, June 1 & 2.

The Flights of Fantasy parade began daily runs on June 19, (and I don't recall, but am guessing that the Studios/Imagineering were invited to the Park on June 26 to experience both of the new summer offerings)

Both of the collector keys are nearly exact duplicates of the original Park and Burbank Cast Invites (except the paper invites didn't have an actual key) These collector keys were given out to the cast members who participated in the various dedication ceremonies."

Pictured above is the envelope the key came in. I have to say that whoever sold this to me did a great job of keeping the envelope flap in perfect condition. When I tried to open this, the flap looked as if it has been licked by the person before they sent it. I tried my best not to rip it, but a small piece eventually came off. You will see at least two other items that have been damaged in my care. Moving on... the bottom right corner is ©1983 Walt Disney Production.

The key also came with two pieces of white cardboard that essentially protected the envelope from being ripped and stained by the key. I want to say its die-cast, but I'm not sure. Nonetheless... its a very solid material. The only downside to the key is the black residue it leaves on your fingers if you touch it. Of course, maybe thats just my key.

Normally I don't link to non-blogs when I make these posts, but this is an exception.

Yesterland has a great article on the Dymaxion House. The house is located inside the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. I'm posting this article because I frequent the museum and the house always reminds me of Monsanto's House of the Future.

The Henry Ford also hosted the first tour stop of the Disneyland:Behind the Magic exhibit. I bring that up because I will eventually post about the experience and provide some history of the museum.

Celebration 25 (Part 7)

Here is the official Celebration 25 DVD. I got mine in the mail today and thought it would be neat to share it with all of you.

October 1, 2007 was an incredible day and it's one that I will remember for a very long time. The producers of the DVD did a great job sifting through almost 20 hours of footage to bring you 2 hours of joy.

The DVD is split into two parts. The first half deals with the events on September 30, and the second half deals with October 1. Each half runs about an hour or so.

For those of us who went to Celebration 25, this DVD is a must have. I had a wonderful time revisiting all the people and events from that day. Sometime in the near future there will be a Celebration 25 book which will be composed of pictures taken by the fans. I will definitely post about the book when it arrives.

Here is a patch from the 1973 Walt Disney World Golf Classic. I will let an excerpt from MousePlanet do the explaining.

"Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural Walt Disney World Open Invitational in 1971. He would win the next two events, the second of which featured the new name of the Walt Disney World Golf Classic (1973). The tournament has seen several name changes, changing to the Walt Disney World National Team Championship in 1974, the Walt Disney World Golf Classic in 1982, the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic in 1985, the National Car Rental Golf Classic/Disney in 1998, the Disney Golf Classic in 2002, and finally the Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort in 2003."

Lets hope the current tournament name will stick around for a while.

Today's post concludes the birthday button madness. What better way to end it with one of the best attractions ever conceived.

Horizons opened on October 1, 1983 and Walt Disney World turned 12 on that same day. To mark that wonderful occasion, Disney made this awesome birthday button.

This is one of the more common birthday buttons and pieces of Horizons memorabilia that you will find on eBay. Currently this button is being offered as a "Buy it Now or Best Offer." The price is $29.99, but you can score one for much cheaper.

Continuing the Walt Disney World birthday button motif, here is the one given to cast members for the 10th birthday. I'm a definite sucker for Disney celebrations, so I had to have this.

This celebration started October 1, 1981 and lasted until September 30, 1982. After the 30th, EPCOT Center opened and we had a new reason to celebrate. We were also given a new reason to distribute birthday buttons. Next post will show you what the button of 1982 looked like.

One of my favorite things to collect is Disney birthday buttons. Especially the ones produced in the 1970s and '80s. They were different, stylish, and celebrated something new each year. This particular button is from 1980 and signifies both the opening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the 9th birthday of Walt Disney World.

I find it strange that there is no © or year on the back. I say this because I own a couple other birthday buttons and all of them are copyrighted and dated. Nonetheless, this is still an interesting item.

Over the next couple days (school permitting) I will post all of the birthday buttons I own. Once that is complete, I'll take a group shot of all the buttons.

To conclude today's post, I'll leave you with an eBay auction. It's no secret that I have an EPCOT Center preference. I found this auction to be really unique considering it's not something you expect regular folks to own.

Vintage Disney Epcot Center Blueprints. 36 total blueprints. Each one measures 48 in. x 36 in. Most date to the early 1980s and have Epcot Center, Future World, etc. in their title block. Several have overview sketches of the park but most depict details such as curbing, walls, restaurant and restroom structural details, etc.

Collector's Collection

Today's collection comes to you courtesy of FoxxFur . You may recognize that name as the author of Passport to Dreams Old & New. If you are not familiar, please check out this amazing blog.

Until 1989, only the Marketplace existed and was known as the Disney Village Marketplace, and before that, the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village. Pleasure Island then opened, and the West Side followed in 1997. Pleasure Island and Marketplace were referred to together as Disney Village until West Side opened, at which point the entire area was collectively renamed Downtown Disney.

That bit of information is from Wikipedia. Normally I don't use that as a valid source, but for today it will be my source.

Looking back at the Village and comparing it to Downtown is hard for me to do. I enjoy Downtown Disney and think it's fun, but the Village was calm and cultured. It may have been boring to some, but it was definitely an experience.

I have a pamphlet from the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village that I will eventually post. I could of sworn I typed up a post about it, but it doesn't exist. However, when I post it, I will include today's guide and you can see the comparison. It may lead some of you to thank your lucky stars that we now have the Downtown area.

In terms of a date, FoxxFur and I agree that it's probably from the early '90s.

World of Free Stuff

My apologies for the lack of updates. I've been very busy with school.

This tab/badge was given to guests for free. According to Walt Dated World, guests were given the badges once they entered the Transcenter. For those of you unfamiliar with that area, it was the showroom you walked through at the end of World of Motion.

Coincidentally, the 1982 EPCOT Center edition of the Orlando Sentinel relates to this post. There is a section containing guests complaints about the parks first weeks of operation.

"Give visitors a souvenir to make them feel like they're not being shuffled out and forgotten at the end of each ride. The Heniz Co. gave out pickle pins at the 1939 World's Fair. Companies could offer similar keepsakes at Epcot."

Good job 1982 visitors, your voices were heard.

If you are interested in finding one of the badges, look no further than eBay. They are up for sale constantly and usually at a cheap price. Try to find one that isn't bent. Also, don't make the mistake I did by assuming these are big. I got the tab with a couple other items in the mail. Well, I figured the seller forgot to put it in because I couldn't find it. I later found it in my garage. It fell out of the packaging when I went to throw away the bubble mailer.

Be Kind Rewind

This VHS from 1980 is truly wonderful. A Dream Called Walt Disney World was produced before EPCOT Center existed and features great footage of Disney World from the 1970s. Some of the footage (not sure if all) was shot in '76 and its apparent due to some of the banners on Main Street, U.S.A.

In terms of what is presented, it's your typical look at Walt Disney World, and then some. There is a considerable amount of time devoted to activities outside of the park. By that I mean golfing, boating, camping, swimming, fishing, and all other outdoor recreation activities. This part of the video really sells you on the "Vacation Kingdom Of The World" slogan.

It's also worth noting that this is the only Disney vacation movie that has ever scared me. To anyone who has seen this, (videos below) there is a part where a golfer hits a golf ball at the camera. Well.. it looked pretty darn real to me and I thought the golf ball was going to hit me. I didn't scream or anything, I just flinched. Hopefully watching it on the computer has the same effect as watching it on a regular television.

Back to the topic at hand.... I'm not sure how many (if any) Disney World videos came out before this, but some of the scenes used in this version have been recycled. The VHS planning videos of the '90s are big offenders in this department. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple scenes. The skeleton hand opening the coffin in the Haunted Mansion, the woman on the Jungle Cruise jumping at the sound of gunfire, and Space Mountain vehicles zipping past a rocket.

The back cover has an interesting picture. I'm referring to the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea picture. The crew is walking on top of the Nautilus seemingly in the middle of the lagoon. I only mention this because it doesn't look like its near or in the dock area. If this assessment is off, please tell me. The back also lists the running time as 25 minutes.

Down below I've linked to the Youtube version of this VHS. Part 1 of the video is missing the Walt Disney Home Video intro. You know the one... of Mickey Mouse in his Sorcerer outfit. That image is actually on the front cover of this VHS. Instead, the WDHV intro consists of a rotating outline of Mickey's body. As it rotates it changes color and the outline shoots out in a forward motion in the form of more outlines. I know that sounds weird, but think of the repeating rainbow logos from EPCOT Center. Thats kind of what its like. Anyway...

Two more things... I swear. The VHS has its own song in the beginning. Also, I've updated the EPCOT Center souvenir video post with a picture of the VHS tape.

Round and Round

I thought I knew where all Disney related items were located in my basement, I was wrong. My father found this button and knew I would love it. I'm not sure where he found it, but I'm happy he did.

I believe I have another one of these buttons in my collection, but I can't remember which character is on it. This one is obviously Minnie Mouse and the button measures 3 1/2" across. The bottom is ©Walt Disney Productions ®. I'm not sure if this is from the 1970s or 1980s, so any help with the date is appreciated.

Collector's Collection concludes with part 2 of Marcel Bonner's collection.

"Next are two matchbooks given to me by Mel's niece. One is Walt Disney Productions showing the old corporate logo of the company. And the other is From WED Enterprises. Both matchbooks were originally owned be Mr. Melton."

"The last group of photos are of a pair of ball caps that I purchased on eBay a few years back. The lady I bought them from told me that her husband had been an engineer working for WED Enterprises when EPCOT Center was being built, and these hats were given to WED cast members at the time"

I'm not sure what decade the match books are from, but as soon as I get that information I will update.

Lastly, a link to a website that has a picture of Mel Melton sitting to the right of former Walt Disney Productions CEO (and Walt's son in law) Ron Miller. Mel is the one with glasses laughing and facing the camera.

Collector's Collection returns with a 2 part post. The following items come from Marcel Bonner. I have featured some of his collection in an earlier post found here.

Marcel had ties to one-time President and Chief Administrative Officer of WED Enterprises, Orbin "Mel" Melton, and continues to share information about him.

"The first group of photos is from the 1960 edition of The International Motion picture Almanac showing that Mel Melton was an assistant treasurer at Walt Disney Productions."

"The next group of photos are of the 1970 Walt Disney Productions annual stock holders report showing that Mel Melton is President and Chief Administrative officer of WED Enterprises."

I must admit, my collection is severely lacking when it comes to items relating to Disney World pre-1971, so this annual report is a real treat.

EPCOLORS...Again (Updated)

Continuing in the spirit of EPCOT Center buttons, I present this delight. It features one of my favorite character costumes, the Spacesuit. Who knew rainbows and spacemen made sense? I have a theory that someones ice cream at WDI melted over this picture during the design process and the concept stuck. Pun most definitely intended.

All jokes aside, this button is a lot of fun to look at. I would have loved to see Centorium in 1982. It must have looked spectacular.

*Update*
I got an e-mail from a reader regarding the button. He claims the button is not from 1982, which isn't strange considering some items say 1982, but aren't made until much later.

"I forgot all about that button that you featured today on your blog but I wanted to let you know that I don't think it's from '82 - I think it came out more in 86 or 87....the characters (meaning Mickey, not Figment) weren't put into EPCOT Center until '84 (it may have been '83 but I'm pretty sure it wasn't until Eisner came to the company).

Hopefully someone else can give you more of a definite answer but I'm pretty sure it was put

out later in the 80s."
